Some Insights to the History of Our Club
The beginnings of the BMW Club of Canada started in the early 1970's with a bunch of enthusiasts in Ontario. We trace our roots back to 1973.
By 1980 the club was well underway, and formally incorporated under the authority of the Canada Corporations act as the BMW Car Club of Canada - Le Club De L'Automobile BMW Du Canada
During the 1990's the club grew with the start of chapters in other provinces
In 1998 a new set of bylaws were adopted for the club
Also in 1998 several of the chapter clubs sought changes in the way national was operating
In the fall of 1999 the then 8 member clubs participated in a chapter development conference.
The outcome of that conference lead to the drafting of a new structure and new national bylaws
During 2000 groups of representatives worked on creating and revising the new structure and bylaws
In 2001 the new bylaws were finally ready and at the national AGM in November of 2001 members voted unanimously to accept the new bylaws and structure
The 8 regional representatives that had been working on the new bylaws and structure became the new national directors
The first national Directors meeting under the new structure and bylaws was held in Vancouver in February of 2002
Based on the outcome of that meeting, revisions were made to our charter documents, and those changes were submitted to and approved by Industry Canada. Those changes included changing the legal name to the shorter form of BMW Club of Canada - Le club BMW du Canada. Along with the name change the new bylaws reflect the umbrella nature of the club as requested by the International Council of BMW Clubs.
The BMW Club of Canada currently represents 13 member clubs with well over 2000 members across the country, and with our new structure and active local clubs our growth rate is strong.
